Sustainability Committee

In 2006, a staff-led body was created to look at what the School should do to reduce waste, cut our carbon footprint and move the School on a more sustainable course. The work being done overlaps with the World AIMS Project.

The committee includes students and has been making steady progress, with awareness campaigns for energy efficiency (including monitoring in Houses) and Fairtrade. In 2008 we installed solar thermal panels on Fen House and are currently investigating more.

Most of the School created a recycling swoosh and won a national competition! In 2007, a student-run body was created to improve the School through the Eco-Schools Scheme. They are also looking at making our purchasing more ethical, working towards Fairtrade School Status.

In November 2007, they published a basic Environmental Review. The students then drew up an Action Plan, published in January 2008, which the School acted on. We also secured a £1700 grant for urinal controllers!

Update: In 2008 a comprehensive Silver Review and Action Plan was produced and the Silver Award achieved in March 2009. The school has now acted on the Action Plan and has applied for our our Green Flag. Download our Eco Code, available in over 20 formats!

The School Shop has stocked items carrying the Fairtrade Mark for some years and frequently expands its range. In 2007 a school-wide awareness campaign was launched, with attention brought to the issue annually.

All the School's coffee and tea is Fairtrade certified. In due course we plan to widen our sourcing of Fairtrade products.
